Any individual, business, church or non-profit agency interested in helping homeless families in St John the Baptist Parish is invited to attend the next McKinney-Vento Community Network meeting.
The next meeting will take place on Monday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. in the Media Center behind the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board office. The school district will set up a link to RSVP for the meeting. Please bring your ideas and let’s come together as a district to help our homeless families.
School districts that receive Title 1 funds are required by law to use Title 1 funds to provide assistance to homeless families. Families must complete an application with the guidance counselor at their school. The application is then submitted to Erica Merrick, district homeless liaison, for final approval.
If the family meets the criteria to receive assistance from McKinney-Vento, the application will be approved and the vouchers will be processed and delivered to the school within 24 hours. The identity of families classified as homeless is confidential.
The St. John the Baptist Parish Federal Programs Department held its most recent McKinney-Vento Community Network meeting on Nov. 13 to inform community agencies, churches and businesses about the McKinney-Vento Act. Those who attended the meeting discussed various initiatives to provide families with assistance.
