GMMS classes cancelled for Monday, August 28

GMMS Parents and Stakeholders:

In our commitment to safety and to err on the side of caution, we have made the decision to cancel school for GMMS students on Monday, August 28th. This additional precautionary measure ensures the well-being of our students and staff.

We understand that this decision may cause some disruption, but it is made with the utmost concern for the safety of our students and staff. Your understanding and support in this matter are greatly appreciated.

All GMMS staff are requested to report to the SJB School Board meeting room on Monday. This day will be dedicated to professional development opportunities, which will help further enhance the quality of education we provide to our students.

School district administrators have been in constant contact with parish and DEQ officials regarding the on-going incident at Marathon Petroleum that began on Friday. Based on the information and assessments provided, there are no indicators that GMMS has been impacted by any air quality concerns. However, in addition to the incident at Marathon, the US National Weather Service New Orleans Louisiana has confirmed that due to the temperature inversion and winds out of the west there is additional smoke smell, haze, and ash parish-wide from the wildfires in West Louisiana. The same conditions are expected tomorrow.
