Paid Summer Internships Allow Students to Earn Credit

Students in the St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District will have the opportunity to earn high school credit and industry-based credentials by completing paid internships this summer.

The Jump Start Summers program is open to students who will be seniors, juniors or sophomores during the 2018-19 school year.

Credits in two classes are available. Students can earn one Carnegie unit in Digital Media I while also earning an industry-based credential (IBC) in Adobe Certified Associate Photoshop or they can earn one Carnegie unit in Entrepreneurship II while earning an IBC in Micro-Enterprise Statewide. Entrepreneurship II requires the prerequisite of the Micro-Enterprise regional credential.

Students participating in the internships will get the chance to hone workplace behavior and communication skills through an internship at local St. John the Baptist Parish businesses such as Elite Affairs, Tony’s Tinting and the Office of Workforce Development.

Wages will be based on attendance, Carnegie unit, internship and credential. The internships will take place from June 4 to July 13 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, although some Fridays may be required. Students will be required to work a minimum of 15 hours and must provide their own transportation.

Students required to attend summer school for remediation purposes are not eligible.

Parents must email [email protected] and submit an application by May 29. Seats are limited and are available on a first-come basis based on the date and time stamp of the email. Applications are available at the St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District Central Office, 118 W. 10th St., Reserve, from Mr. Derron Cook at East St. John High School and from Ms. Deanna Larmeu at West St. John High School.

A mandatory parent meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on May 29 at the St. John the Baptist Parish Public Library’s LaPlace branch on Highway 51.

These internships are being made possible through a grant from the Louisiana Department of Education funded by the Supplemental Course Allocation.
