SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY

PROCEDURES FOR BUS ACCIDENTS

 

 

BUS DRIVER:

 

I.

Stay calm.  Never leave scene of accident until all students are removed from the area.

 

II.

Secure the bus.

 

  1. Activate hazard lights.

  2. Set parking brake and shift transmission into appropriate gear.

  3. Stop engine and turn off ignition unless ignition switch must be on to operate two-way radio; if so, turn off heater and defroster fans and any other equipment that would drain electricity from the battery.

 

III.

Send for help.

 

IV.

Decide whether or not to evacuate the bus.  Evacuate if any of these conditions exist:

 

  1. Presence of fire or toxic fumes.

  2. Danger of fire.

  3. Unsafe position of the bus.

  4. Hazardous weather conditions or eminent danger that could affect safety of students.

 

V.

If evacuation is ordered,

 

  1. Use the exit farthest from danger.

  2. Use the service (front) door when time and conditions permit to minimize injury in evacuation procedures.

  3. Use service door and emergency (rear) exit if time is a factor.

  4. If the bus is equipped with emergency exit windows and/or roof-top escape hatches, use them only when the service door and/or the emergency exits are not adequate to evacuate students safely.

  5. Use responsible student to assist with the process.

  6. Take the first aid kit.

  7. Move passengers to a safe area approximately 100 feet from the bus.

 

VI.

Apply first aid, if required, and especially if any of these conditions exist:

 

  1. Blocked airway or stoppage of breathing.

  2. Severe bleeding.

  3. Shock.

 

VII.

Secure the area.

 

  1. In the event of a collision, move the bus only if there is a danger from fire or further collision or if ordered to do so by a law enforcement officer.

  2. Place reflective triangles or flares as required.

 

VIII.

Notify appropriate authorities, including the Supervisor of Transportation, as soon as possible.

 

IX.

In the event of a collision or other accident, do not discuss with anyone other than the police.

 

X.

Obtain names, addresses and telephone numbers of witnesses and drivers of other vehicles involved, along with license numbers of vehicles and drivers involved.

 

XI.

Follow up as required with SR-10 (Louisiana drivers) and other reports, meetings with transportation staff, etc.

 

NOTIFICATION OF PARENTS:

 

A.M. accidents -- principal or designee will contact parents.

            P.M. accidents (after school hours) -- central office staff will contact parents

 

PROCEDURE FOLLOWED BY POLICE:

 

I.

Secure the scene -- traffic control, investigate.

 

II.

Obtain information of all vehicles involved in accident.

Drivers' License Number

Insurance Agent

Policy Number

License Plate Number

 

The police will give this information to all parties.

 

III.

Take statements from drivers.

 

IV.

Take names, addresses, and ages of all passengers in vehicles.

 

V.

Names of witnesses to incident.

 

VI.

Give citation to driver who they believe may be in the wrong.

 

VII.

Fill out the motor vehicle traffic accident report.

 

PROCEDURE FOLLOWED BY ACADIAN AMBULANCE:

 

When the sheriff's office is notified of a bus accident, the Acadian Ambulance Service will automatically respond to the scene.

 

I.

Evaluate the scene.

 

II.

Gather information.  Assess the scene.  Assessment -- will talk to authorities, bus driver, and individuals for possible injuries.

 

  • How many people were involved in accident.

  • How many need to be treated.

  • The degree of injuries.

  • The type of first aid treatment. 

 

* At most bus accidents, Acadian Ambulance Service Supervisor will be on the scene. This supervisor will work with the sheriff's department to gather information pertaining to individuals in the accident.  (Two will share information.)

 

III.

Transport patients to hospital for injuries--will gather the information on the people transported.
